Introduction: SAMI LABS LIMITED, formerly known as Sami Chemical & Extracts Limited, started operations in 1991 to develop new manufacturing processes and analytical methods for the global nutrition industry.

Promoted by Dr. Muhammed Majeed, the company has witnessed unprecedented growth. A pioneer in the nutraceuticals industry, the company is a leading exporter of standardized herbal extracts, fine chemicals, specialty chemicals, cosmeceuticals, phytonutrients and probiotics.

Modern state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities were established at regular intervals to cater to SAMI's growing business. SAMI, today, is proud of its four manufacturing units situated at Kunigal, Mysore, Nelamangala, Singasandra and the Corporate Office and R&D Center in Bangalore, India. SAMI has also set up a Super Critical Fluid Extraction (SCFE) facility through carbon dioxide processing at Nelamangala, utilizing indigenous technology developed by Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. This is a strategic shift from herbal extraction through solvents to extraction through carbon dioxide process to ensure more hygienic products to meet or exceed the international standards.

Dr. Muhammed Majeed, Chairman and Managing Director of SAMI is also a pioneering entrepreneur and pharmacist who successfully introduced several new products in the nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industry in the US. Dr. Muhammed Majeed migrated to the US in early 1975 immediately after completing his B.Pharm from Kerala University. He held progressively responsible research positions with multinational pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer Inc., Carter Wallace and Paco Research. While pursuing his career, he also completed his Ph.D in Industrial Pharmacy from St. John’s University, Jamaica, New York in 1986.

Dr. Muhammed Majeed established Sabinsa Corporation in 1988, which markets several nutritional supplements of Indian, African, European and American origin to the rapidly growing US and global nutraceutical and cosmeceutical markets. Sabinsa, today, has units at Piscataway and Princeton, New Jersey, as well as in Payson, Utah.

To facilitate increased demands for innovative application-based products, Sami Labs has established the state-of-the-art research facility at Bangalore.

New product development and market-oriented research is the main thrust and focus at SAMI. Backed by years of research, experience, sophisticated manufacturing and marketing practices, SAMI is set to revolutionize the nutritional supplement industry.

The company’s products have earned accolades overseas. In 1999, Bioperine, a standardized extract of black pepper was featured as a finalist in the prestigious Thomas Alva Edison Patent awards in the US in the Health & Medicine category. ForsLean®, a standardized extract from the Indian medicinal plant, Coleus forskohlii won the best "Nutra Award Best New Product of 2001" in the US.

SAMI pioneered the manufacture and introduction of several phytonutrients in association with Sabinsa, USA. Sami has a total of 27 international patents -- nine US patents have been granted and 18 more are pending. To be a global player in the true sense, Sami plans to introduce the cultivation of olive, which is indigenous to the Mediterranean countries. In the organic synthesis area, the current research on chiral chemicals and biocatalytic processes is aimed at developing sophisticated products with increasing demand in global markets.

To cater to the expanding global market, marketing tie-ups were launched in Europe, Australia, West Asia and South America, including full-fledged offices in China, Japan and Canada. The nutraceuticals focus has extended to cosmeceuticals that finds increasing application in personal care products. The thrust and focus at SAMI is on market-oriented research and new product development. Ideas for new product development are based on the feedback received from its US marketing group -- Sabinsa Corporation -- and its customers, as well as the needs of other international markets.
