| By the time the sunburst finish finally arrived on Gibsons Les Paul Model in 1958, the guitar had already evolved through several modifications through the course of the decade, including the arrival of the Tune-o-matic bridge in 1956 and humbucking pickups in 1957. As legendary as '50s Les Pauls have become, Gibson had sold fewer of the guitar every year since 1953, the year following its introduction, when the company shipped 2,245 Les Pauls. Gibson president Ted McCarty blamed some of the models waning popularity on its flashy Goldtop finish, and attempted to bolster its appeal with an elegant and more traditional Cherry Sunburst finish. Since this finish now displayed the grain of the guitars carved maple top, Gibson also now used bookmatched"two-piece tops glued together with a center seam, giving each guitar its very own distinct look and marking the beginning of the guitar worlds fascination with figured maple tops, even though the majority of the tops used in 1958 were considered plain"when compared to the tops used one year later and beyond. The 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue from Gibsons Custom Shop presents the most accurate recreation yet available of this first incarnation of the hallowed Burst,"in a guitar that contains all the crucial ingredients, with a less showy maple top that is sometimes considered more authentic looking than those with highly detailed figuring. Also, while all Les Pauls were finished in Cherry Sunburst in 1958, these faded in greatly varying degrees, which are now accurately represented in the 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue finish selections. Available in VOS are Bourbon Burst, Faded Tobacco Burst, Iced Tea Burst, Lemon Burst, Sunrise Tea Burst and Washed Cherry Sunburst. Gloss choice is Washed Cherry Sunburst. The 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue relies on the ingredients that made the Les Paul a classic in the first place, but puts them together in the way that first began to show off what was going on underneath the finish. The Gibson Custom Shop uses a body of solid, non-weight relieved mahogany, which blends depth and richness with the snap and clarity of the maple top. The quarter-sawn mahogany neck still has a chunky, rounded '50s profile, which, in combination with the traditional long-tenon neck joint, enhances sustain and resonance as well as feeling great in the hand. In addition to these classic ingredients, the 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue also benefits from Gibson Customs 20th Anniversary Specifications, newly adopted for 2013. These include a one-piece rosewood fingerboard, Kluson? Deluxe machine heads, hot-hide glue neck fit, a Historic Truss Rod assembly with no tubing, accurate body and fingerboard binding color, new Custom Buckers created in the image of the original PAFs, and period-correct Aniline dye beneath its nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Gibson Customs new Custom Bucker accurately recreates the original PAFs of the late '50s, using Alnico III magnets and unequal turns of 42 AWG wire in each coil for that characteristic PAF bite."These pickups clean up beautifully at the guitars volume controls, while Bumble Bee tone caps assist in that warm, singing woman tone"when you roll back the tone controls. To top it all off, the 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue plays superbly right out of its Custom Shop hardshell case thanks to a trip through one of Gibsons state-of-the-art Plek machines before it leaves the Custom Shop floor. | Frank Zappa has long been hailed as one of the most inventive rock guitarists ever to have graced the stage and studio. The live performances with his band The Mothers at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood from December 1973 and afterdocumented in the album Roxy & Elsewhere and on subsequent DVD releasesare often considered to display the pinnacle of his unbridled invention. The heavily modified SG Special used in those shows is an iconic instrument among Zappa fans, and now Gibson USA recreates that legendary SG in perfectly faithful detail to bring the Frank Zappa? Roxy SG to anyone seeking an extremely versatile, and superbly playable modified-vintage SG Standard. Zappas original SG Special was an early 60s model with a fast, slim neck profile and the smaller pickguard characteristic of the era, which would have been made with P-90 pickups originally. While it reflects the heavily modified state of FZs guitar, the Frank original Roxy SG still functions perfectly as a straight-up vintage-reissue SG when desired. But just flip either of the two mini-toggle switches to split the uncovered humbuckers coils, or to throw the pickups out of phase, and you leap into funky Zappa-certified tonesall aided by the highly functional Maestro-style vibrola with Lyre tailpiece. And with its natural neck and headstock, and a carefully color-matched rendition of FZs faded nitrocellulose Cherry finish, the Frank Zappa? RoxySG looks every bit as distinctive as it sounds. Body and Neck The Frank original Roxy SG begins with the same time-tested tonewoods that helped to make the SG Standard legendary in the first place. The body is crafted from solid Grade-A mahogany in the iconic double-horned style with beveled edges for enhanced playing comfort. A solid, quarter-sawn, Grade-A mahogany neck is carved in the slim early60s profile that Zappa preferred, which measures 0.775"at the 1st fret and 0.910"at the 12th, for superb speed and comfort. Its topped with a Grade-A rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays and 22 frets made from wire based on precise measurement of the jumbo frets on the original Roxy"SG. Like FZs guitar, the neck is natural mahogany, and the headstock is white. Pickups and Electronics The modified electronics on FZs original Roxy"SG were a big part of that guitars mojo, and Gibson USA goes all out to replicate that versatility in the Frank Zappa Roxy"SG. Two enhanced 57 Classics with four-conductor wiring replicate the same thick, juicy tone of the humbuckers Zappa added to his guitar. They are routed through a pair of mini-toggle switches mounted in a channel under the pickguard, to yield coil-splitting for single-coil tones, and out-of-phase tones, both of which were a big part of Zappas signature sound. The remaining control complement includes the traditional three-way toggle selector and an independent volume and tone control for each pickup. Hardware and Plastics Tremolo was a key part of FZs signature sound, and the Frank Zappa Roxy"SG is loaded with a Maestro-style vibrola with decorative Lyre tailpiece and flat bar handle to give the same creative kick to your own playing. A Tune-o-matic bridge offers precise intonation, while a set of Grover? tuners with historic rounded buttons are both efficient, and true to the look of the original guitar. The guitar carries the small erearly 60s five-ply SG pickguard with special dimensioned neck spacer to alter the position of the neck pickup to match FZs original guitar and a traditional black truss-rod cover. | The Gibson Les Paul Model as it stood in 1956 is a pure rocknroll legend, represented in greater detail than ever before in the 1956 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue. This was not quite where the Les Paul had begun, and not quite where it was going, but a powerful stop along that road that carried plenty of important features that have made this mid-'50s marvel a beloved tone machine to this very day. The guitar still retained its fat, snarling P-90 pickups and a rounded '50s neck profile that not only feels superb in the hand, but also transmits added string vibration from neck to body to enhance resonance. One of the most significant changes to the Les Paul Model of 1956, though, was the addition of the new Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiecewhich debuted on the Les Paul Custom two years beforereplacing the trapeze and wraparound tailpieces that had adorned earlier versions. The innovative Tune-o-maticalso known as the ABR-1was the brainchild of celebrated Gibson president Ted McCarty, and set the standard for simplicity and functionality in electric guitar bridge design. In addition to its foundation of a solid, lightweight mahogany body with carved maple top and a glued-in, quarter-sawn mahogany neck with long-tenon neck joint, the 1956 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue benefits from Gibson Customs 20th Anniversary Specifications, newly adopted for 2013. These include a one-piece rosewood fingerboard, Kluson? The sonic powerhouse of the 1956 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue remains its two fat single-coil P-90 pickups, beloved since the 1940s for their aggressive midrange, solid low end, and sparkling, silky highswith that ever so slightly gritty edge for added cutting power. Professional Electronics The Les Paul Ultra PRO uses Epiphone's 4-wire, nickel/silver base humbuckers with newly tooled, USA-style bobbins. In the neck position is Epiphones chrome-covered ProBucker-2 with warm, thick vintage tone. It's uniquely paired with a chrome-covered ProBucker-3 humbucker, an inspired by version of Gibson's BurstBucker-3, that features unevenly wound coils and Alnico-II magnets that replicate that "Patent Applied for" airy tone.
