Are you desirous of entering the profitable West African market? Then read on to see what you must do.
With my long experience in international import and export trade working with foreign companies here and then my own company, I know and recognize that the best and the most acceptable form of payment remains the irrevocable and confirmed letter of credit. But this is often a problem in West Africa for several reasons. The most important being that most of the importers are illiterates or half-illiterates or people who have made their fortune in the informal sector therefore they are ignorant of many of the requirements of international trade. Besides, many of them are used to working outside the banking system. But even when they are not, being used to buying and paying for their goods on the spot without using the banks, when it comes to going through the bank to buy goods the bureaucracy of the African banking system firghtens them somewhat. Also modifications to clauses of the L/C, when necessary, and delivery of goods not true or identical to sample make the importers prefer to buy goods when they are available at the ports. Other importers also deal with D/A or D/P but due to bad experience these payment methods are not easily acceptable to many suppliers. What then is the way out?
If you really want to enter the West African market the best way will be to open a branch office here to be manned by a representative from your company. (We can help you do this). But if the costs deter you, then all you have to do to sell here is to first establish the reputation of your goods which, once moving, will not fail to attract buyers who may even now be ready to open L/C or even pay cash in advance.
Now, how do you establish the saleability of your goods? You do this by bringing down shipment(s) yourself, sales of which are to be supervised by yourself or by a representative from your company. (We can help you do this as your agents in West Africa). Then what? You sit back and take the numerous orders which have made West Africa an attractive market for many exporters.
