| By the time the sunburst finish finally arrived on Gibsons Les Paul Model in 1958, the guitar had already evolved through several modifications through the course of the decade, including the arrival of the Tune-o-matic bridge in 1956 and humbucking pickups in 1957. As legendary as '50s Les Pauls have become, Gibson had sold fewer of the guitar every year since 1953, the year following its introduction, when the company shipped 2,245 Les Pauls. Gibson president Ted McCarty blamed some of the models waning popularity on its flashy Goldtop finish, and attempted to bolster its appeal with an elegant and more traditional Cherry Sunburst finish. Since this finish now displayed the grain of the guitars carved maple top, Gibson also now used bookmatched"two-piece tops glued together with a center seam, giving each guitar its very own distinct look and marking the beginning of the guitar worlds fascination with figured maple tops, even though the majority of the tops used in 1958 were considered plain"when compared to the tops used one year later and beyond. The 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue from Gibsons Custom Shop presents the most accurate recreation yet available of this first incarnation of the hallowed Burst,"in a guitar that contains all the crucial ingredients, with a less showy maple top that is sometimes considered more authentic looking than those with highly detailed figuring. Also, while all Les Pauls were finished in Cherry Sunburst in 1958, these faded in greatly varying degrees, which are now accurately represented in the 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue finish selections. Available in VOS are Bourbon Burst, Faded Tobacco Burst, Iced Tea Burst, Lemon Burst, Sunrise Tea Burst and Washed Cherry Sunburst. Gloss choice is Washed Cherry Sunburst. The 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue relies on the ingredients that made the Les Paul a classic in the first place, but puts them together in the way that first began to show off what was going on underneath the finish. The Gibson Custom Shop uses a body of solid, non-weight relieved mahogany, which blends depth and richness with the snap and clarity of the maple top. | Frank Zappa has long been hailed as one of the most inventive rock guitarists ever to have graced the stage and studio. The live performances with his band The Mothers at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood from December 1973 and afterdocumented in the album Roxy & Elsewhere and on subsequent DVD releasesare often considered to display the pinnacle of his unbridled invention. The heavily modified SG Special used in those shows is an iconic instrument among Zappa fans, and now Gibson USA recreates that legendary SG in perfectly faithful detail to bring the Frank Zappa? Roxy SG to anyone seeking an extremely versatile, and superbly playable modified-vintage SG Standard. Zappas original SG Special was an early 60s model with a fast, slim neck profile and the smaller pickguard characteristic of the era, which would have been made with P-90 pickups originally. While it reflects the heavily modified state of FZs guitar, the Frank original Roxy SG still functions perfectly as a straight-up vintage-reissue SG when desired. But just flip either of the two mini-toggle switches to split the uncovered humbuckers coils, or to throw the pickups out of phase, and you leap into funky Zappa-certified tonesall aided by the highly functional Maestro-style vibrola with Lyre tailpiece. And with its natural neck and headstock, and a carefully color-matched rendition of FZs faded nitrocellulose Cherry finish, the Frank Zappa? RoxySG looks every bit as distinctive as it sounds. Body and Neck The Frank original Roxy SG begins with the same time-tested tonewoods that helped to make the SG Standard legendary in the first place. The body is crafted from solid Grade-A mahogany in the iconic double-horned style with beveled edges for enhanced playing comfort. A solid, quarter-sawn, Grade-A mahogany neck is carved in the slim early60s profile that Zappa preferred, which measures 0.775"at the 1st fret and 0.910"at the 12th, for superb speed and comfort. Its topped with a Grade-A rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays and 22 frets made from wire based on precise measurement of the jumbo frets on the original Roxy"SG. Like FZs guitar, the neck is natural mahogany, and the headstock is white. Pickups and Electronics The modified electronics on FZs original Roxy"SG were a big part of that guitars mojo, and Gibson USA goes all out to replicate that versatility in the Frank Zappa Roxy"SG. Two enhanced 57 Classics with four-conductor wiring replicate the same thick, juicy tone of the humbuckers Zappa added to his guitar. They are routed through a pair of mini-toggle switches mounted in a channel under the pickguard, to yield coil-splitting for single-coil tones, and out-of-phase tones, both of which were a big part of Zappas signature sound. The remaining control complement includes the traditional three-way toggle selector and an independent volume and tone control for each pickup. Hardware and Plastics Tremolo was a key part of FZs signature sound, and the Frank Zappa Roxy"SG is loaded with a Maestro-style vibrola with decorative Lyre tailpiece and flat bar handle to give the same creative kick to your own playing. | Epiphone and Trivium's Matt Heafy have team up to create the Limited Edition Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom-7 seven-string guitar, a totally killer original take on the world-famous Les Paul. Designed in close collaboration with Matt Heafy, each Ltd. Ed. Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom reflects his distinctive approach to guitar, which has earned him and Trivium scores of dedicated fans around the world. The rule books on how-to-play a Les Paul go right out the window when Heafy plugs in and his revolutionary use of an LP Custom seven-string is a breakthrough in contemporary metal and hard rock. Now, Matt Heafy joins an illustrious group of Epiphone artists with the introduction of this signature model. The Limited Edition Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom-7 features an all blacked-out ebony gloss finish thats especially striking on the sleek profile of an LP Custom. Like all great Les Pauls, it features a mahogany body with a plain maple veneer top, a time-tested combination that has gone virtually unchanged since the '50s. The mahogany neck has a fast 1960's SlimTaper D?profile with a glued-in deep set-neck joint with an "Axcess" heel for a smooth and easy reach to the upper frets. The scale length is 24.75" and the ebony fingerboard has a 12" radius and 22 medium jumbo frets and features pearloid block inlays, which seem to practically glow in the dark against the Ebony finish. The nut, which is also black is 1 7/8". The classic clipped dovewing headstock features the historic pearloid split-diamond?Les Paul Custom inlay and a vintage style Epiphone?logo in white. The bell-shaped truss rod cover is black with a shadow of white binding and MKH Les Paul Custom in white silk screen. Each guitar features beautiful 7-ply white and black binding on the top and 5-ply binding on the headstock. The fingerboard features single ply white binding. Matt Heafy asked that these models feature black active EMG pickups voiced especially for the guitars unique profile The Limited. Edition Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom-7 seven-string features an EMG-707 in the neck position and an EMG 81-7 in the lead or bridge position. The 81-7 is EMGs king high-output pickup, designed especially for 7-string lead guitarists. The EMG 81-7 excels at high volume overdrive. The EMG-707 has long been the standard 7-string guitar pickup since its introduction in 2001. The 707 features Alnico V magnets with wide aperture coils, which beef up the low B tone while offering a more responsive and super tight overall sound. An easy-access 9V battery compartment can be found on the back of each guitar. The Limited Edition Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom-7 seven string features Epiphones no-compromise electronics including a 1/4?non-rotating output jack and volume and tone controls with Black Speed Knobs that are powered by full-size 500K?potentiometers. The pickup switch is Epiphones all-metal 3-way pickup selector with a black toggle cap. Epiphone Rock Solid Hardware: Like all Epiphones, it includes Epiphones made-to-last heavy-duty hardware including Epiphone StrapLocks, including a tune-o-matic-7/StopBar on this special seven-string. It also features deluxe die-cast machine heads with metal tulip buttons?with a 14:1 tuning ratio.
