Regular Expanded Metal (standard expanded metal) is a finished product as it comes from the press after having been die cut and expanded. Each sheet that comes off the expander is in standard or regular form with the junctions at the strands and bonds forming a ridge surface.
Typical applications include safety guards on various pieces of equipment or machinery.
The illustration to the right shows that the strands and bonds form a sharp angle to the original plane of the solid sheet.
Expanded metal is produced in regular form off the expanders. The strands and bonds are set at a uniform angle to the plane of the sheet. this gives added strength and rigidity, as well as a skid resistant surface.
Standard sheets:
1. Camber- The greatest deviation of a side edge from a straight line shall not exceed 3/32 inch per foot (0.8mm per 100mm) of dimension.
2. Taper- Edges shall not deviate from parallel by more than 1/16 inch per foot (0.5mm per 100mm) of dimension, or 1/4 inch (6.4mm) overall, whichever is greater.
3. Squareness- Ends shall not be more than 1/8 inch per foot (1mm per 100mm) out of square or 1/2 inch (12.7mm) overall.
4. Flatness (levelness)- Sheets shall be free from waves or buckles that are in excess of 1-1/2 inch (38.0mm) from a plane surface.

Expanded metal is an intermediate raw material that allows light and air to flow freely through it and that has more rigidity than the sheet from which it was produced.
Expanded metal is a form of metal stock made by shearing a metal plate, sheet or coil in a press, so that the metal stretches, leaving diamond-shaped voids surrounded by interlinked bars of the metal. These openings are of uniform size and regularity. Expanded metal is also referred to as perforated metal. It is a large part of the metal industry and plays a key roll in fabrication.

Heavy duty welded gratings are made of carbon steel and stainless steel. The former products are available bare, painted with hot galvanizing. The latter products are available mild finish, electro- polished.
Welded Steel Bar Grating is the most popular of all grating types due to its strength, cost-efficient production and ease of installation. It is the ideal materials for application such as airfields, highways, industrial plants, truck and bus terminals, parking lots and railroad yards. Common uses are flooring, driveways, subway an d tunnel ventilation grilles, curb inlet grates, ramps, docks, etc.
When order steel grating, you should give the welded steel grating types. Heavy duty welded steel W series, heavy duty welded WH series, heavy duty riveted steel R series, heavy duty standard welded grating and so on.
When specify welded steel grating, first specify the type of grating . In the instance of standard welded grating, the "W" indicates the assembly of the grating shall be Welded construction, the "19" indicates that the bearing bars shall be 19/16's (1-3/16) inches on center, and the "4" indicates that the cross bars shall be spaced at 4 inches on center. Welded Steel Bar Grating is the most popular of all grating types due to its strength, cost-efficient production and ease of installation. Welded steel bar grating is resistance welded to create a rugged, one-piece constructed panel. The bearing bars are automatically resistance welded at the contact point with the cross bars and, under a combination of high heat and pressure, are fused together to form a permanent joint. The cross bars provide a high degree of rigidity, yet retain a smooth flat surface for free and easy walking.
When order the welded steel grating, first specify the type of grating from the table below. For perforated with a round hole pattern, the die is circular. The die’s diameter can vary from approximately twice the thickness of the material being punched to over two inches.
Round hole perforated sheets are the most common and most requested. There are several types of hole diameters: very small, medium and large size. Hole pattern is of primary importance: the most popular arrangement is the 60 degree angle pattern, which combines a high rigidity and a decent proportion between open and full areas. The 90° pattern is equally popular, above all for aesthetic needs whereas the 45° pattern is now almost disused.
Another important technical detail to consider is the pitch (interaxis), which is the minimum distance between the centers of two adjacent holes.

Perforated carbon steel has no specified minimum quantity of any alloying element and contains only an incidental amount of any element other than carbon, silicon, manganese, copper, sulphur and phosphorus.
It is the most corrosive and least expensive of the commonly perforated metals.
Carbon steel is either referred to as Hot Rolled, steel that underwent a rolling thickness reduction step while hot, or Cold Rolled, where the steel is cold reduced to the specified thickness. Cold rolling elongates the grains of the steel in the direction of rolling, making the steel hard and brittle. Annealing in a reducing atmosphere recrystallizes the grains, giving the perforated sheet steel the ductility needed for its intended use.
Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled Hot rolled coil or sheet steel that has been descaled of oxide film by either a chemical method, mechanical method, or a combination of both and oiled for corrosion protection.

Copper is one of the most useful metals known to man, and it was one of the first to be utilized. Copper by itself is relatively soft compared with common structural metals. Trace elements are often added to copper to increase the strength, hardness and corrosion resistance. When zinc is added to copper to form brass it is stronger and harder than either of the pure metals and extremely useful for many perforated metal applications.
Zinc Levels
Zinc is added to copper in amounts ranging from about 5 to 45%. As a general rule, corrosion resistance decreases as zinc content increases. The main problems with the higher zinc alloys, with more than 20% zinc, is dezincification which can occur in a wide variety of acid, neutral and alkaline media. Zinc is a highly reactive metal as it has a very weak atomic bond relative to other metals. Simply, zinc atoms are easily given up to solutions with certain aggressive characteristics. During dezincification, the more active zinc is selectively removed from the brass, leaving behind a weak deposit of the porous, more noble copper-rich metal.
Brass with a higher zinc content has a yellow color while brass with a higher copper content has a reddish color. Therefore the higher the copper content, the more the color of brass changes towards a reddish brown color.
To avoid the dezincification problem, Ferguson uses types of brass with a high copper content such as 80% and 90%.
