Description:
Mulberry is a fast growing deciduous woody perennial plant. It has a deep root system. The leaves are simple, alternate, stipulate, petiolate, entire or lobed. The number of lobes varies from one to five. Plants are generally dioecious. Inflorescence is catkin with pendent or drooping peduncle bearing unisexual flowers. Inflorescence is always auxiliary. Huperzine-A is one of the alkaloids contained in a plant known as Chinese club moss. Other types of club moss are common in the United States, but true Chinese club moss is very hard to find on the U.S. market. It can be grown in Hawaii, but not in any other part of this country. Believed to be largely unchanged from prehistoric plants, club mosses are small ground covers that do not produce flowers. Related to the fern family of plants, they spread by sending out spores instead of seeds. They thrive in damp, shaded areas such as tropical woodlands and the edges of swamps. Huperzine A and huperzine B are two of the chemicals that have been separated from Chinese club moss. Huperzine B is also an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, but because its effects are much weaker than those of huperzine A, most research has focused on huperzine A. Synthetic forms of huperzine A have been made in chemical laboratories and they appear to be as effective as natural huperzine A in studies. Huperzine A has also been combined or ＂hybridized＂ with the prescription drug tacrine (Cognex), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating Alzheimer’s disease. The resulting ＂huprine＂ combination seems to be more effective at limiting acetylcholinesterase activity than either agent alone. Ginseng, Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, is a well-known Chinese traditional medicine. There have been more than 300 original papers in Chinese and in English during the last 10 years in China,and more around the world.
1.Previous studies, including research from the University of Toronto, have shown that Panax ginseng may lower blood glucose in conditions associated with diabetes.
2.In a study at the Minnesota Mayo Clinic, terminal cancer patients taking a higher daily dosage of ginseng reported less weakness and fatigue than those taking lower dosages or placebos.
3.Other experiments indicate possible beneficial effects on immune function due to its anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
4.Results from scientific research on the health benefits of Asian ginseng remain inconclusive to date. The contradictory data from different studies may be attributed to varying types and quality of ginseng being analyzed. Few extensive clinical trials on Asian ginseng have been conducted. Most studies have been selective, lack statistical analysis, or have flaws in experimental design.
5.Some previous studies were only conducted with animal subjects. For example, ginseng appears to inhibit cancer-related characteristics in animal models, but this effect is unclear in humans.
