Bitumen is a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid that is present in most crude petroleums and in some natural deposits. Until the 20th century, the term asphaltum was also used.It is most commonly modelled as a colloid, with asphaltenes as the dispersed phase and maltenes as the continuous phase (though there is some disagreement haltuamongst chemists regarding its structure).One writer states that although a "considerable amount of work has been done on the composition of asphalt, it is exceedingly difficult to separate individual hydrocarbon in pure form", and "it is almost impossible to separate and identify all the different molecules of asphalt, because the number of molecules with different chemical structure is extremely large".
In American English, asphalt (or asphalt cement) is the carefully refined residue from the distillation process of selected crude oils. Outside the U.S., the product is often called bitumen. Natural deposits terminology also sometimes uses the word bitumen, such as at the La Brea Tar Pits.
The primary use of asphalt is in road construction, where it is used as the glue or binder for the aggregate particles.

|
Cutback asphalt is simply a combination of asphalt cement and petroleum solvent. Like emulsions, cutbacks are used because they reduce asphalt viscosity for lower temperature uses (tack coats, fog seals, slurry seals, stabilization material). Similar to emulsified asphalts, after cutback asphalt is applied the petroleum solvent evaporates leaving behind asphalt cement residue on the surface to which it was applied. Cutback asphalt is said to "cure" as the petroleum solvent evaporates away. The use of cutback asphalts is decreasing because of:
Environmental regulations. Cutback asphalts contain volatile chemicals that evaporate into the atmosphere. Emulsified asphalts evaporate water into the atmosphere.
Loss of high energy products. The petroleum solvents used require higher amounts of energy to manufacture and are expensive compared to the water and emulsifying agents used in emulsified asphalts.
In many places, cutback asphalt use is restricted to patching materials for use in cold weather

Oxidized Bitumen grades are blown or oxidized bitumen which are produced by passing air through soft bitumen under controlled temperature conditions. This process gives the bitumen more rubbery properties than penetration or hard grade bitumen's, and a variety of uses in industrial applications.
Oxidized bitumen grades are suitable for sealing saw cuts and joints where there is expected to be the minimum amount of moving in the joint. Their wide temperature range prevents bleeding in high temperature applications. Asphalt emulsion is a combination of three basic ingredients, asphalt, water, and small amount of an emulsifying agent. In the same process, these components are introduced into mechanism known as a colloid mill, which shears the asphalt into tiny droplets. The emulsifier, which is a surface-active agent, keeps the asphalt droplets in a stable suspension and controls the breaking time. The result is a liquid product with a consistency ranging from that of milk to heavy cream, which can be used in cold processes for road construction and maintenance.

Bitumen Membranes |
|
|
Bituminous membranes are made up of more than one product:
Bitumen - Mixed with a filler component such as limestone or sand. Polymers are added to the bitumen such as APP (atactic polypropylene) a plastic additive that gives rigidity and tear resistance, or SBS (styrene butadiene styrene) a rubber additive that gives more elastic benefits.
Base Products - Polyester, fibre glass, rag fibre (hessian), and paper. These products are bought in roll format and are pulled through the bitumen mixes on huge rollers. The base product becomes saturated in huge tanks by the tar like bitumen substance, creating rolls of waterproof material.
Mineral - (Optional) Small granules are added to the top of the felt, decreasing the products fire vulnerability.
Thin, transparent film - This product is added to the base of the felt during manufacturing on all torch-on products. This stops the felt from sticking to itself when rolled up during the packaging process.
Benefits
Bituminous roofing products are used for waterproofing roofs on buildings.
Benefits include that they move with the structure and do not absorb water. Bitumen is a hydrocarbon and is created naturally from crude oil.
The products have an extremely long life span, with most membranes having BS (British Standards) marks against each product name.
The fumes given off during installation are not harmful to human health and there is low noise pollution during application.
Bituminous membranes protect insulation and can reflect harmful sun rays. New products also contain photovoltaic cells that can produce solar energy.
Bitumen is not water soluble, non-biodegradable, not classified as carcinogenic and does not release harmful toxins.
